Within the study of the lyric, different units with which a poetic text is composed are differentiated: the verse, the rhyme and the stanza.
In the first place, the verse is a metric unit of rhythm or rhythmic unit that composes poetry:
In the second instance, the rhyme is the total or partial coincidence of phonemes from the last stressed vowel of the verse:
For their part, stanzas are the combinations or groups of verses that are repeated regularly. Poems are not always composed of stanzas and the verses of the same stanza can be equal or unequal in relation to the number of syllables they present.
Verse classes
The verses take different names according to the number of syllables with which they are composed. In Spanish, the measure can range from four to sixteen syllables. Verses of major art are considered those whose meter has more than eight syllables. On the contrary, the verses of minor art are those that have eight or fewer syllables.
The fifteen and sixteen syllable verses (also called the octonary) are very rare.
