The diminutive nouns are a kind of nouns that express a smaller size than what they name or a smaller degree of some of its characteristics, whether they name a person, animal, or object. Diminutive nouns are formed from diminutive suffixes that are added to a noun, from which they take the root.
Some of the diminutive suffixes with which diminutive nouns are formed are the following:
- -ito, -ita: cottage (diminutive of House), little place (diminutive of place), little song (diminutive of song)
- -eta, -ete: old man (diminutive of old), buddy (diminutive of friend)
- -uelo, -sole: chicuelo(diminutive of guy), stream (diminutive of stream), stream (diminutive of River)

In short, diminutive nouns they keep the root of the noun and to this they add the suffix that contains the meaning of decrease that increases the qualities or characteristics of the referent of the noun. On the other hand, augmentative nouns are those that enlarge the characteristics or qualities of a noun (for example, carrazo, great goal).
