The nominal qualitative variables are those variables that indicate attributes or qualities, that are expressed in words and whose categories are not ordered according to a hierarchical criterion. For example: The types of climate of a country, whose values or categories are tropical climate, dry climate, temperate climate, continental climate and polar climate.
In statistical investigations, the variables are the characteristics that are analyzed of a population and they are classified into two groups according to what types of values they acquire:
In addition to the nominal variables, there are other types of qualitative variables, the ordinal ones (they differ from the nominal ones because take values that are ordered hierarchically) and the dichotomous ones (they are distinguished from the nominal ones because they can only acquire two values).
