    150 Examples of Acute, Llanas and Esdrújulas Words

    The sharp words are those whose last syllable pronounced with more emphasis. For example: SWlar, gooddad, praytion. The plain words are those whose penultimate syllable is pronounced with more emphasis. For example:plusma, dayriver, thereright. The esdrújulas words are those whose penultimate syllable is pronounced with more emphasis. For example:withoutthesis, triangulo, I laughedgido.

    Words that have more than two syllables are made up of one stressed syllable (the one that is pronounced with greater intensity) and by one or more unstressed syllables (those that are issued without emphasis).

    Depending on the location of the stressed syllable, that is, depending on where in the word the accent falls, words are classified as acute, flat and esdrújulas.

    When do they have a tilde?

    In Spanish, the general rules of accentuation determine in which cases a word should or should not have accent mark.

    Sharp words

    The sharp words They have a tilde when they end in N, S or a vowel. For example:

    limon, aafter, nanduo. However, there are some exceptions to this rule:

    • They take tilde when they do not end in N, S or vowel, but contain a hiatus formed by an open vowel (A, E, O) and a stressed closed vowel (I, U). For example:maíz, eitherto go, balast.
    • They do not have an accent mark if they end in a consonant followed by N or S. For example: mamutts, icebergs, complots.
    • They do not have a tilde if they end in Y. For example:ACking, withI go, pejeking.

    Plain words

    The plain words or serious have a tilde when they do not end in N, S or a vowel. For example: coldGil, footballbowl tozúcar. However, there are exceptions to this rule:

    • They have a tilde when they end in N, S or a vowel, but contain a hiatus formed by a stressed closed vowel (I, U) and an open vowel (A, E, O). For example: youítwo, thereeither, guidein.
    • They have an accent when they end in S, but before this letter there is another consonant. For example:forceps, biceps, comic.
    • Some plain words ending in a vowel have diacritic tilde (that tilde that is used to differentiate two words that are written the same, but have different meanings). For example:howuncle, como, Donof.

    esdrújulas words

    The esdrújulas words they always have a tilde. For example: analysis, prothesis, AClido. However, some adverbs ending in -mente may not have an accent, because they maintain the orthographic accentuation of the adjective from which they derive. For example: faithlizmind, ohdazmind, weekendmind.
