100 Examples of Monosyllables

Monosyllables are those words that only consist of one syllable. For example: plus, fish, you, me, hundred.

Monosyllables are composed of few letters and, in addition to consonants, may contain:

• a vowel. It can be A, E, I, O or U. For example: no, peace, two.
• Two vowels that form diphthong. They are two vowels that are pronounced in the same syllable and can be:

• An open vowel (A, E, O) + an unstressed closed vowel (I, U). For example: there, you go, you see.
• An unstressed closed vowel (I, U) + an open vowel (A, E, O). For example: fine, cyan, cruel.
• Two closed vowels (I, U). For example: very, flow, went.

• Three vowels that form triphthong. They are three vowels that are pronounced within the same syllable and that follow the unstressed closed vowel sequence (I, U) + open vowel (A, E, O) + unstressed closed vowel (I, U). For example: ox, woof, meow.

According to spelling rules, the monosyllables do not have an accent mark, except those that have diacritic tilde, that is, the graphic accent that is used to distinguish two words that are written the same, but have different meanings. For example:

In addition, a large part of the sentences are monosyllabic. interjections (for instance: Ouch!, Phew!, Hey!) and of the onomatopoeia (for instance: wham, click, bah).
