Examples / / June 01, 2022
The diphthong, the triphthong and the hiatus are sound strings that contain vowels the same or different and that, according to the orthographic rules of Spanish, remain in the same syllable or they separate. According to this, they can be distinguished:
- Diphthong. It is a sequence of two vowels that are part of the same syllable. For example: bEU-no, cua-dro, yesia-month.
- Triphthong. It is the conjunction of three vowels in the same syllable. For example: U-ru-goops, co-pieiyes
- Hiatus. It occurs when two contiguous vowels belong to different syllables. For example: ca-er, sa-bgo-to, ti-o.

the diphthong
A diphthong can be made up of:
- open vowel(a, e, o) + unstressed close vowel (i, u), in any of its combinations. For example: achey-you, not-via, vien-to.
- closed vowel(i, u) + close vowel (i, u), in any of its combinations. For example: jui-cio, cui-da-do, triun-fo.
To take into account: The letter H, when silent, does not prevent the formation of diphthongs. For example: over there-lar, prohi-bir, cohi-bir.

the triphthong
A triphthong is formed as follows:
- unstressed closed vowel (i, u) + open vowel (a, e, o) + unstressed close vowel (i, u). For example: ac-twowyes, boops.
Triphthongs are less frequent than diphthongs and many of them occur in conjugations of the second person plural in its peninsular variety (you), in the combination of the vowels iái either iei. They also appear in onomatopoeia or foreign words that have been incorporated into the language. For example:lim-piáis, cam-bieiYEwow, gwow.
To take into account: When the Y is pronounced with its vowel sound, that is, at the end of the word, both diphthongs and triphthongs can be formed. For example: rHey, vhey, Pa-ra-goops.

the hiatus
A hiatus, also called adiphthong, can be:
- Vocal or simple hiatus. It is formed by an open vowel (a, e, o) followed by another open vowel (a, e, o). For example:ca–either-ba, peither–and-ma.
- Vocal hiatus of sound repetition. It is formed by two equal and contiguous open or closed vowels. For example: rand–and-le-gir, al-ba–he has-ca, leither–eitherr.
- Accent hiatus. It is formed by a stressed closed vowel. (í, ú) followed or preceded by an unstressed open vowel (a, e, o). For example:frand–ír, san-dí–a.
The hiatus is very common in the Spanish language: all verbs conjugated in tense conditional (I would run, you would talk, we would seek) and some of the past imperfect (went out, ate, lived) are examples of words with hiatus.
To take into account: As with diphthongs, the presence of the letter H between vowels does not interfere with the hiatus. For example: bow, Ah orr-ca-do, proh-be.
