business speech examples
- Steve Jobs speech on the influence for the creation of his Mac company, at Stanford University (2005). “As I was no longer enrolled and had no required classes, I decided to attend the calligraphy course to learn how to do it. I learned about serif and sans serif typefaces, about variable letter spacing, about what really makes a great typeface great. It was subtly beautiful, historically and artistically, in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating. None of this had even the slightest hope of practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed the Mac with that at its core. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that particular course in college, the Mac would never have had multiple fonts or proportionally spaced characters. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer had them now. If I had never decided to quit, I wouldn't have gotten into that calligraphy class and personal computers wouldn't have the wonderful typography that they do."
- Mark Zuckerberg's speech on the vision of large business projects, at Harvard University (2017). “First, we must take on large relevant projects. Our generation will have to live with the replacement of tens of millions of jobs by autonomous cars and trucks. However, we have the potential to do much more together. Each generation has works that define it. More than 300,000 people worked to send a man to the Moon, including that janitor. Millions of volunteers immunized children around the world against polio. Many others built the Hoover Dam and other great projects. These projects not only served as motivation for those who participated in them; it also showed the country that we could do great things.”
- Speech by Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, in the United States House of Representatives (2020). "The concept of Amazon came to me in 1994. The idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles - something that simply couldn't exist in the physical world - was exciting to me. At the time, he was working at a mutual fund in New York City. When I told my boss I was quitting my job, he took me for a long walk in Central Park. After listening to me for a long time, he finally said, 'You know what, Jeff? I think this is a good idea. But I think it would be a better idea for someone who doesn't have a good job. He convinced me to take two days to think before I told him my final decision. It was a decision I made with my heart and not with my head. When I am eighty years old and reflect on my life, I want to have minimized the number of things I regret. And most of them are acts of omission, the things we didn't try, the paths we didn't travel. Those are the things that haunt us. And I decided that if I didn't at least try my best, I was going to regret not participating in this thing called the internet that I thought was going to be big."
