50 Examples of Graphemes
Examples / / June 03, 2022
The graphemes are the different graphic signs that are used in writing, which in Spanish coincide with the letters of the alphabet and that allow us to differentiate meanings. For example: ACshereja. These two words are distinguished by the graphemes Y .
In the written Spanish language, the graphemes make up a system, which is an abstraction of the alphabet, and are usually represented in angle brackets to distinguish themselves from the letters. For example: the grapheme of letter A is, the grapheme of the letter B is, the grapheme of the letter C is .

Characteristics of graphemes
In linguistics, graphemes are considered to be the units of writing that are characterized by being:
- Minima. Because they cannot be divided into smaller units.
- Badges. Because they have features that distinguish them and that allow differentiating words and, therefore, meanings. For example: graphemes Y allow to differentiate the wordsz and gos.
- Sequential. Because they are written one after the other.
- isolatable. Because they can be separated from each other in the written string.

graphemes and phonemes
In languages whose writing is alphabetic, graphemes usually represent the phonemes (the minimum sound units that allow differentiating meanings). In Spanish, the correspondence between graphemes and phonemes occurs in most cases. For example: the grapheme represents the phoneme /a/.
However, there are other cases in which the correspondence is not complete:
- A grapheme representing different phonemes. Depending on the context, the grapheme can represent one sound or another. For example: the grapheme represents the phonemes /i/ and /y/.
- Two graphemes representing a single phoneme. This union of two graphemes that corresponds to a single sound is called a digraph. The digraphs of Spanish are ch (represents the phoneme /ch/), ll (represents the phonemes /ll/ or /y/), qu (before of E or I represents the phoneme /k/), gu (in front of E or I represents the phoneme /g/) and rr (represents the phoneme /rr/).
- A grapheme that does not represent any phoneme. The grapheme does not represent any sound. For example: the grapheme it does not represent any sound in most contexts.
- A grapheme representing two phonemes. The grapheme represents two sounds. For example: the grapheme represents the union of the phonemes /k/ and /s/.
- A phoneme that is represented by more than one grapheme. Different graphemes represent the same sound. For example: The phoneme /k/ is represented by the graphemes (if it is before A, O or U), Y and with the digraph qu.
