Hyphen (punctuation mark)
The script it's a punctuation sign auxiliary not to be confused with stripe. It is usually written attached to both the word that precedes it and the one that follows it. However, when used metalinguistically, it is possible to leave a white space before and after the hyphen.
What are scripts for?
Scripts are basically used for two main functions:
-
Hyphenation sign at the end of the line. When the word does not enter completely and must be cut to continue on the next line, the hyphen is applied. The cut is not random, but is done according to the rules of separation of syllables. For example: Because of the storm, the waves stir-
ban strongly in the sea. - Join sign between words. When it comes to a compound word, the hyphen is applied to join both elements. Each word will keep the tilde that corresponds to it as an independent word. It serves as:
- binding of nouns. You can use hyphen to bind both nouns either common nouns each. For example: meeting Boca-River, collection spring Summer.
- binding of adjectives. You can use hyphen to link adjectives demonyms or relational. In these cases, the first adjective remains invariable in masculine singular and the second agrees in gender and number with the noun it modifies. For example: production gender and number, class theoretical-practical.
- Union of a prefix and a word. You can use hyphen to bind a prefix separable to a word with a capital initial, either a initials or a proper name, or a number. For example: pro-Obama, anti-NATO, under-18.
- Union of dates, pages and numbers. A hyphen can be used to separate dates, page numbers, or Roman and Arabic numerals. For example: Gulf War (1990-1991), pages 119-213, volumes I-IV.
- Stylistic usage. A hyphen can be used to separate the prefix from its base, in order to highlight the semantic value of the precomponent. It can also be used to join several words that want to be presented as a unitary whole. For example: dances are a pre-presentation or one representation, Heidegger and his concept of being-in-the-world.
Screenplay (literary genre)
The literary script is a text that contains the necessary details for the realization of a work of art. theater, a movie, a television or radio program, an advertisement, a comic, or a videogame. It exposes the indications of everything that the work will need for its development. It covers both literary aspects (dialogues between the characters) and technical aspects (stage directions, scenery, lighting, sound effects, music).
Format of literary scripts
Broadly speaking, the elements that make up a literary script are:
- Headerof sequence. Describe if the scene is inside or outside, the name of the set, if it is night or day, among others. It is written in capital letters.
- Action. Briefly describe the setting and the actions that are taking place in a simple way, in the present tense and in the third person.
- Dialogue. Describe which character is going to speak. It is written in a centered way, to differentiate it from the action. The name of the character is indicated in capital letters, and below, the dialogue is written. If it is a voiceover of one of the characters in the story, it will be indicated in parentheses (OFF). If it is an external narrator, it will be put (VO), which means voiceover.
- Dimensions. Give directions to the actors. They are indicated below the character's name, and before dialogue, or on a line between lines of dialogue. To indicate that the character is continuing to speak, (CONT.) should be noted.
- transitions. They indicate when there is a cut. They are included to the right, at the end of the scene, or in the middle, if necessary.
How to write a script?
Here are the steps for writing a literary script:
- Propose a working title. It is important to give the project a title and not stop to think of a definitive one at this stage of the script writing process. This will come as the story unfolds.
- identify the characters. It is key to ask yourself the following questions: who is the character? What is his goal? What does he do to achieve it? How does his story end? By answering these questions you can get enough material to create a synopsis or the plot of the story.
- Order the history of each character. It is very important to continue formulating questions and answers to collect enough material from each character. Then the facts must be ordered to think about what happened first and what happened later.
- Cross the stories of the characters. It is necessary to cross the stories in a dramatic way, where there are unexpected encounters, disagreements, etc.
- fill in the gaps. It is key to go back to review where incomplete or unfinished situations have been left and fill them in. Also at this point you can expand on each story line in as much detail as possible.
- Formulate the first draft with dialogues. It is necessary to divide and regroup the actions of the previous text in scenes. And, at this point, you should start writing the dialogue for each scene.
- let the story rest. It is key at this time to let the script rest after writing this first draft. The longer it can be left unread, the better the strangeness effect it will produce when you read it again.
- correct and rewrite. It is important that, when rereading the material, the dialogues are corrected and polished, avoiding common occurrences or clichéd sentences. It is also key to ask yourself if the characters are key to the story that is being narrated, if the scenes are believable, if there is a lot of filler material (in In this case, it should be cut), if the objective of each character is clear, if there are alterations in the time lines, if there are holes in the story, among many others. others.
