The paraphrase It is a resource that consists of reformulating a statement using different words, but with a similar meaning to those of the original statement. For example: The statement "The man entered his house" can be paraphrased into "The man entered his house."
In paraphrasing, also called paraphrase, explain in your own simple words what another person said or wrote. This is done in order to generate a message that is shorter or easier to understand, but that has the same meaning as the original.
Reformulating texts is useful for making study summaries, for explaining very complex concepts or theories, and for synthesizing what someone else has stated.
There are different techniques for paraphrasing. The most commons are:
- Replace with synonyms. Change a word to a synonymous, that is, another word with the same meaning. For example: "sir" can be changed to "man".
- Change the sentence structure. Modifies the syntax of prayer. For example: If a phrase is in active voice (“The man found the papers”), you can pass it on to passive voice (“The papers were found by the man”).

types of paraphrasing
There are two kinds of paraphrasing:
- mechanical paraphrasing. Words and expressions are modified and the syntax is almost identical to the original.
- constructive paraphrasing. Profound changes are made, other words or expressions are incorporated and the syntactic structure is modified.
- For example: Carolina resigned from her job after a decade dedicated to teaching.
- mechanical paraphrasing: My sister quit after ten years of being a teacher.
- constructive paraphrasing: My sister stopped working after a long time working in schools.
Paraphrasing Examples
- The cat ran to the kitchen because he heard that his food was being served.
- mechanical paraphrasing: The feline was rushed to the kitchen, because he heard that they were giving him his food.
- constructive paraphrasing: The family pet perceived that they would give him his food and, therefore, he quickly went to where his plate was.
- Of course, the boy was happy because he had been given a kite.
- mechanical paraphrasing: Of course, the boy was happy because they had given him a kite.
- constructive paraphrasing: As is often the case with children when given a gift, this boy was delighted with his new kite.
- María has an orange jacket, Florencia is wearing a blue one and Andrea has put on a violet one.
- mechanical paraphrasing: María is wearing an orange jacket, Florencia is wearing a blue one and Andrea is wearing a purple one.
- constructive paraphrasing: María, Florencia and Andrea wear an orange, a blue and a purple jacket, respectively.
- The doctor of philosophy said that all people have inalienable rights.
- mechanical paraphrasing: The philosopher stated that all individuals have inalienable rights.
- constructive paraphrasing: The thinker pointed out that all human beings have rights that they cannot renounce under any circumstances.
- The chef maintained that oriental food is very rich.
- mechanical paraphrasing: The chef pointed out that oriental food is very tasty.
- constructive paraphrasing: The cook, therefore an expert in food, believes that oriental dishes are delicious.
- The manager sent an email to the employees to tell them the news.
- mechanical paraphrasing: The manager sent an email to his subordinates to tell them about the news.
- constructive paraphrasing: The employees received an email from their boss, in which the recent changes in the company are mentioned.
- Sir, could you tell me your first and last name, please?
- mechanical paraphrasing: Sir, could you tell me your first and last name, please?
- constructive paraphrasing: Excuse me, I would need you to tell me what it is called.
- The service offered by this cell phone company is the best in the market.
- mechanical paraphrasing: The service provided by this mobile company is the best in the market.
- constructive paraphrasing: This phone company has the best service you can find.
- The president said that the new economic measures will improve the lives of citizens.
- mechanical paraphrasing: The president affirmed that the recent economic measures will improve the life of the country's inhabitants.
- constructive paraphrasing: The president promised that the quality of life of the Colombian people will be better thanks to the new economic measures.
