The catalog sheets They are those that are used to record basic information about publications that are in the same physical place, such as a library, and that are part of a collection. In other words, they are used to classify texts that have a common framework.
Unlike other types of files, the catalogs have the characteristic of establishing the inventory of a set or group of publications, books or texts that are found on a site, which should not necessarily be physical, since it can also include university and institutional digital repositories, among others.
Catalog files are widely used, especially in libraries, where it is necessary to control the books available, essential information about the texts such as the author or the year of publication, but also about the nature of its theme or if it is part of a larger collection wide.

Places where catalog sheets are used
- Libraries.They are essential to organize and establish the location of the available publications, the number of copies, the subject they deal with, among others.
- Universities. They can be useful for the classification of works available in university repositories, to be updated in relation to the statuses of certain investigations or theses that have been presented internally and that can only be consulted at the university.
- digital repositories.They can be useful in virtual repositories. With technological advances, it can be found that many of these have catalog files of the material they host or other resources that may be of interest to the visitor.
Parts of a catalog card
- token number. Its writing in the upper right corner is recommended. It serves to have continuity with respect to the entire catalog that is being worked on, among other things, for easy ordering and to have control over all the material that has been registered.
- Last name and first letter of the author's name. This form is usually used, which is the most common way of recording authors in the files, since in academic fields the surname is usually the most representative.
- edition data. Data such as the year of publication, the edition number, the publisher, the place where it was published are registered in this space. This allows us to know how old the book is, its popularity, and gives rise to the belief that it may be an outdated work or later supplemented in another book.
- book dimensions. The size of the book is inscribed lengthwise and widthwise. In many libraries these physical features can make locating the book easier.
- Total number of pages. The length of the text is recorded according to the number of pages it has.
- Title. The name of the work to be cataloged and the subtitle, if any, are transcribed.
- Matter. Talk about the topic that is worked on in the publication. It can also be cataloged making divisions by topics covered, areas of knowledge, discipline, etc. It is usual that it is also recorded at the top of the card, on the other side of the number.
- Synopsis or review. The main ideas of the publication are written. It is requested that the description be brief and clear so that the person who consults has precision on the subject and can determine at a glance if it is a job that may have what they are looking for.
