A metaphor is a rhetorical device or figure that is used to describe an object or situation through the similarity it may have with another.
The metaphorical words They are those that used within the same context, allow to clarify or highlight a quality or aspect about what is spoken.
There are several reasons why it is convenient to use metaphors, among which are:
- Give you wealth and increase the interest of a talk or speech.
- A metaphor allows a word to acquire different meanings.
- It helps the recipient of the message to create a more realistic image about what is being said.
Example of metaphorical words:
The inside of the house was an oven.
In the previous sentence, oven is a metaphorical word and is used to say that inside the house it was hotter than outside.
His smile revealed his pearl teeth.
Here the metaphorical word pearl is used to say that the teeth were perfect, aligned and white in color.
The inspector will continue his investigation until he reaches the source of the problem.
The metaphorical word source is used to indicate that the inspector will not stop until the source of the problem is found.
The goalkeeper has cat reflexes.
In the previous sentence, the metaphorical word cat is used to explain that the goalkeeper is very agile and fast.
This car is an airplane.
The word airplane is used in a metaphorical sense to say that the car is very fast.
Last night I was so tired that I slept like a dormouse.
The word dormouse in the previous sentence is used metaphorically to say that she fell asleep soundly.
That night the moon was silver
The word silver is used to describe the color of the moon.
