Indefinite articles in English: a and an (uses and examples)
Examples / / April 12, 2023
to / an are the indefinite articles in english, which are used to refer to a noun any of the same class (person or object), without defining or specifying one in particular. For example: I need to buy to new shirt. / I need to buy a new shirt.
TO is used when the following word begins with a consonant (to plane, to student, to job), while still is used when the following word begins with a vowel (still Manzana, still elephant, still old books).
Articles in English, unlike Spanish, do not have a gender (masculine or feminine), so the translation of to / an It is "a" or "an", depending on the context. For example: to door/ a door,to dog/ a dog.
In some contexts you can use both to / an as the cardinal number one (one), which places more emphasis on the number. For example:I have one free day. (is more emphatic than I have a free day.).

Uses of to / still
- to / an are used together with a singular (countable) noun to name it for the first time. For example: I will buy to new house./ Let's buy a new house.
- to / an They are used to refer to one of many, without specifying exactly which one. For example: Let's listen to to song./ Let's listen to a song.

Careful:
- An is used before "h" that does not sound when pronouncing it (hours, honest). A is used before "h" which sounds aspirated, that is, it sounds like a consonant (house, hat).
- A is used with words beginning with "u" pronounced as a diphthong "iu" and not as a vowel (university, unicorn).
- The definite article is used the (and not the indefinite to / an) to designate a noun (person or object) that is clear from context, or of which there is only one. For example: The teacher gave us a lot of homework./ The teacher gave us a lot of homework.
