Importance of GMOs
Miscellanea / / August 08, 2023
GMOs are products, foods, genetically modified. Essentially it is an organism into which genes from another organism have been incorporated so that the resulting new product has a series of characteristics new (larger size, more quantity, resistance to pests, etc.). The best known by most of the population, among many others, are corn or soybeans.
One of the reasons put forward for this type of modification is the need to feed the entire population. worldwide, which will increase enormously in the future and, at the same time, avoid pests that affect many types of crop.
There is currently a lot of pressure to not only expand the list of GM crops, and the percentage of their uses, but also to add to this the possibility of commercializing modified animals genetically. The main problem with the use of transgenic products is that, to this day, the consequences of their consumption in humans in the short and long term are not really known.
Although it is true that the use in crops avoids the use of millions of liters and kilos of pesticides, it is also It is true that most of the companies that use transgenics do not provide other options for the control and elimination of pests. What is clear is that the use of transgenics increases the benefit of companies since the size of the plants can be higher (since the pests do not affect it, the harvests are much larger and more abundant, etc.). But on the other hand, what companies often do is create single-use sterile seeds so that the farmer necessarily have to buy the seed again the following year if you want to replant the cereal, tuber, vegetable, etc and if this is done with plants, it is logical to think that animals and their
trade selective will be the next step.At this point, we must ask ourselves if transgenic products are something positive for the human being or it can become a way to control the feeding of humanity, in the not so distant future, by a few companies, which are more than likely only interested in profit. There are more and more voices that demand not the elimination of these products, but that they be carried out more exhaustive and rigorous analyzes that ensure that they do not affect, nor will they affect, the human being in a future.
