Importance of Human Rights
Miscellanea / / August 08, 2023
The simple condition of belonging to the human race grants us a series of rights and freedoms that must be cared for and respected by everyone, throughout the world equally. These are Human Rights, such as the right to life, liberty, personal security, or protection against discrimination, among others.
It is understood that Human Rights have a number of characteristics that are intrinsic to them and that provide security to every human being in any part of the world so that they are respected under the same conditions. Thus, the rights that we mentioned, in addition to being timeless and personal (that is, they do not expire and apply to everyone) are indivisible (one cannot exist without the other being fulfilled) and non-transferable (they cannot be given, we are born with them therefore we precede). This gives them a condition of imprescriptibility that means that there is no government, human being or institution that can doubt them or not comply with them without knowing that they are committing a crime.
Brief history of Human Rights
For many specialists, the concept of Human Rights as we know it today arises after the French Revolution, in 1789. This is so since the idea of freedom, equality and fraternity appears in the collective imagination, but also documents that carefully sought to protect the private property. Before the current Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) texts were drafted that served as background and that raised a list of very important rights. The first was signed in 1789 but was modified in 1791 and 1793.
Beyond previous historical background, it will not be until after the Second World War, and due to the events experienced during it, in 1948, when collected through 30 articles in UDHR in the framework of the Organization of United Nations, the basic rights and freedoms of all human beings. But, in order for these rights to be respected equally throughout the Planet, they were integrated into the Privacy Policy. International deals through the International Bill of Human Rights, by which the 47 signatory States pledged to comply with them.
The observation and care of Human Rights
At present, despite the fact that specific intergovernmental institutions have been created to ensure these tasks, such as the UN Human Rights Council; There are also International Non-Governmental Organizations whose purpose is the protection of Human Rights. And it is that, the work carried out by organizations such as Human Rights Watch (HRW) or Amnesty International in the defense and protection of human rights, as well as in the study of the state of the rights of men and women throughout the world, has come to convert them as a reference for knowledge of the situation current.
We must clarify here that the existence and proliferation of these non-governmental organizations is largely due to part to non-compliance by the States of various parts of the world with the agreements proposed by the UDHR. This can be clearly seen in regions such as Africa or the Middle East where civil wars have generated deaths by the millions and the conflicts suppose a permanent fight for better conditions of life. For example, it is estimated that in Syria the death toll from the civil war in which the government is involved exceeds 500,000.
Thus, we can explain the importance of human rights, going a step further, as the fundamental value of the World Society, on which the rest of the rights rest and are structured. It is from them and their fulfillment that we can approach healthier, more humane and respectful ways of life, with greater tolerance and harmony among nations. For this reason, and for the system to have meaning and shape, we must all safeguard the continuity of rights where they are recognized through their Constitutions, but above all, the mission of these institutions must seek the extension and effective application of these rights where even today it is not known. his existence.
In conclusion, we highlight Human Rights, not only from the relevance they have acquired at a legal level in Western democracies, but also as the substrate on which humanity must nourish itself, trying to preserve them, for those who were lucky enough to be born there where they are not recognized, nor respect.
