Miscellanea / / August 08, 2023
The southern sea was discovered by Núñez de Balboa on September 25, 1513. He was the first European to see it after a series of journeys and trips. He took possession of it in the name of the crown of Spain. Later, Fernando de Magallanes would rename it the Pacific Ocean.
The remarkable aspect of the South Sea is that it has been essential for commercial exchange and population between Europe, Africa and America.
Currently, the place where the Pacific Ocean was discovered is located on the Isthmus of Panama, so the subsequent and current relationship with navigation and the trade worldwide it is more than evident. That particular area, the Isthmus of Panama, is the narrowest part between the two oceans, so any merchandise that wanted to be moved from one side of the continent to the other could be used using this. This saved money and time to take their products to the other side.
Currently, crossing the isthmus of Panama is the canal that bears the name of the country, the Canal de Panama, which is an interoceanic waterway between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean at its deepest point narrow. This canal was inaugurated in August 1914 and through it ships and goods can transit quickly and cheaply between the two oceans. In this way, commercial and economic exchange between countries is favored.
Thus we can understand the value of the discovery of the Pacific Ocean and, by extension, its possibilities as an element of union and closeness between the continents.
Until then, the ships had to go all the way around the continent to be able to take their shipments of all kinds to Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania, etc. However, upon discovery of this particular point in the geography American, it was possible and it was facilitated that the transactions They could be carried out quickly, so the connection between the countries was also fast and in this way trade relations between the different countries were facilitated and increased.
On the other hand, the increase in commercial relations also helped to a greater knowledge of the geography of the discovered American continent and, in turn, it attracted a greater number of people who decided to seek a better future in the new continent from the economic and vital point of view.
