Importance of the Thesis
Miscellanea / / August 08, 2023
The thesis is a work investigation systematic and exhaustive about a topic -which is chosen by the researcher- and which, in most formal education systems, It is the obligatory step to obtain an undergraduate or postgraduate university degree, and depending on the range to be achieved (bachelors, masters, doctorates, postdoctorates) the thesis to be carried out will have a lower or higher level of demand.
However, beyond the level required in the exhaustiveness of the thesis, they all share at least one characteristic in common: from the theses of licencitauas (which are called usually final degree projects, because many assure that they do not have a required rigor as is the case of postgraduate theses) to the theses of postdocs, the investigation is governed by a methodology which contains steps to follow, and that they must necessarily be taken into account so that the thesis, as academic/scientific research, is well-founded and the results or conclusions reached have scientific validity.
In general, the steps to follow in the preparation of a thesis, are:
1- Choice of theme: step in which the general topic on which the thesis is going to be outlined is chosen. For example, migrations in Latin American countries.
2- Search for background or definition of the "state of the art": It consists of searching, reviewing and investigating all the publications or works with academic validity that have been previously carried out on the general topic that we have chosen. Also included are interviews or journalistic reports (or other publications appearing in the mass media of communication and who are not necessarily scientists or academics) to personalities who have an "authoritative voice" to give an opinion or teach on the subject.
3- Statement of the problem: From the subject, the central problem of our thesis emerges, generally converted into a question. For example: what are the communication processes of Bolivian immigrants in Argentina to achieve social recognition?
4- Foundation: It must be based on why the research, through its particular topic and problem, is important to be treated academically.
5- Hypothesis: They are assumptions based on the problem statement. For example: Bolivian immigrants who inhabit Argentine territory establish links with local governments to achieve social recognition through the dissemination of their own culture.
6-Theoretical framework or conceptual framework: it is the baggage of theories that will outline the essence of our thesis according to the central theme.
7- Field work: Here observations, interviews, inquiries are made exclusively with the corpus of our research. The corpus is the object of study, which according to the example that we have been proposing, would be Bolivian immigrants living in Argentine territory.
8- Tabulation and interpretation of data: If interviews or surveys have been carried out, the data and information are interpreted according to the theories used in the theoretical or conceptual framework.
9- Conclusions: Conclusions are made where the hypotheses raised at the beginning of the investigation are taken into account.
