The most violent struggle between two opposing country proposals
Mostly there is talk of internal conflict and civil war, but it is not an exaggeration to talk about terrorism, and that is how many have also decided to call this tragic and aggressive period in Peru.
The suspension of the constitutional guarantees and the establishment of the death penalty for those responsible for terrorist crimes plunged the country into a critical situation in terms of human rights, and in a state of constant alert for two long decades.
An obstacle to national development
The Truth Commission that was created after this stage, with the mission of rebuilding the social, political, and institutional fabric with certainties, estimated that it caused the Some 70,000 people died, mostly civilians, who were held hostage in this extremely violent struggle between a recently inaugurated democratic government with a liberal profile and a faction subversive, embodied by the terrorist organization Sendero Luminoso, with active cells in almost the entire country, and which planned to overthrow the government to establish another with a sign communist.
In it, two diametrically opposed country ideas were basically settled, an official one embodied by the democratically elected government that promoted a liberal model close to the right, and on the other hand an opposition sector identified with communism, which claimed violence to seize power and install its project political.
The unstoppable increase in poverty, social inequality, discrimination, the weakness of the economy co-opted by hyperinflation, recession, and unemployment contributed to fueling the extreme positions of the groups in conflict.
The material destruction and the systematic violation of human rights were other of the worst consequences tragic events that went through a country that was practically unable to grow or offer well-being to its population.
A migratory wave that only wanted peace and prosperity
It was also the cause of the migration the most massive that was recorded in the country's modern history, innumerable numbers of Peruvians left their homeland in search of better opportunities and peace.
It went through three democratic governments, that of Fernando Belaúnde Terry, Alan García, and Alberto Fujimori, who of course, in addition to fighting against the conditions circumstances just mentioned had to engage in a constant struggle with the rebels, to which more actors joined to support one side and another and even to face among themselves: paramilitary bands, other subversive groups, foreign powers, and the military force of the state in the face of the impossibility of achieving a solution from the policy.
The installation and advancement of the drug trafficking business
Drug trafficking also held a leading role in the process and grew in power and space thanks to it.
Located on the side of the guerrilla and Sendero Luminoso, he managed to consolidate his action in an area known as VRAEM, corroded by the marginalization of extreme poverty and malnutrition, where he found the ideal place to grow.
