Importance of Not One Less
Miscellanea / / August 09, 2023
The name of Ni Una Menos represents one of the strongest struggles and one of the most valid claims in recent years in Argentina, although it has spread to other countries. It is the concept that serves to designate the fight against gender violence, to end femicides and to be able to change the elements of the society that encourage control, aggression and killing of women by men.
The spontaneous birth of a movement that has no turning back: the empowerment of women
While historically the murder of women by men (whether acquaintances, couples or unknown men) was always titled "crime of passion" in the media, in recent years the idea was born in Argentina that we no longer talk about crimes that not involve passion but acts that involve violence, the search for dominance and humiliation by men towards women. women. This, the main and most extreme result of patriarchy, has earned an infamous place in the media with the increasing number of crimes against women of different ages, looks, social status and character.
He motion It was born as a phrase that seeks to point out that the death of any more woman is no longer tolerated, that is, that not one less is missing. And although the desire remains simply that, a desire, faced with harsh reality, is symbolically significant since it shows that the awareness feminine can no longer be hidden, that it is growing and that the fight for equality of gender in every sense cannot be delayed any longer.
The events that determine the birth and progress of Ni Una Menos
Although it is difficult to determine what or which case was the one that marked the beginning of this claim in Argentina, given the abundance of cases of violence and murder (many times with mutilation, rape or torture included), was the history of Melina Romero who could have started this fight. Melina was a teenager who in 2015 was murdered in dark conditions involving close and unknown men around her.
His death, added to the numerous deaths that have occurred and the degrading way in which the media represented their history, started the claim that since then has only grown and taken more strength.
Unfortunately, nothing much has changed in reality since then, since in just two years many more women have lost their lives due to femicides committed by men around them or not. However, the importance of this fight has had to do especially with making visible a situation that until a few years ago was understood as something to be expected or understandable. It has also served to question and put on trial many macho and violent structures of domination, persecution, humiliation and violence against women.
From 2015 onwards several massive marches have been carried out, with more and more women, and there has even been The First International Women's Strike was held in March 2017, which was replicated in more than 50 countries of the planet.
