Summary Characteristics

A summary is a type of writing or spoken presentation in which the main concepts of a topic are expressed in a hierarchical and orderly way omitting the details that deepen the topic and concentrating on the main idea and the most concise way of expressing it, understanding the idea principal.

This type of information is applied mainly in the school or academic regime, in the second sense come the administrative summaries that are a brief explanation of a report or explanation and the summaries of other subjects.

Summary characteristics and objectives:

Author.- In school summaries and in some administrative or documentary summaries, the author of the work is mentioned as well as some information about him.

Compilation.- It is the gathering of information that is necessary, this can be obtained from books or projects, but it must always be found in the material related to the subject.

Conciseness.- This is to say the information in a clear and reduced form, taking the main ideas (concepts), but without going too deeply into them.

Congruence.- This is the logic and consistency of ideas, which should always be focused on the topic used.

Contents.- This is the information used, the content is absolutely at the discretion of the one who makes the summary.

Originality.- This is a characteristic that applies mainly in school summaries, due to the mandatory work requirements.

Veracity.- The summaries must be truthful, but the veracity must be taken into consideration from the point of view of the subject, book or source of information

Purpose.- The purpose of a summary is to provide the information that is required, with enough points to fully understand what is being discussed.

Theme.- The subject is always the one that has been assigned, both in administration, or in school matters.

Bibliography.- This is always optional in relation to the school, since it is the administrative or other summaries usually have prior knowledge of the required information.
