The Middle Ages refers to the period of time between classical antiquity and the Renaissance, beginning in the year 476 with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and ends in 1453, with the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire, after the taking of Constantinople by the Turks. It was characterized by being a stage of cultural and social pause or numbness. Great power of the Church, theocentric society.
Chronology of the Middle Ages
I-IV centuries:Years 0 d. C. to 467. Ancient Age: Classical Greco-Roman art and culture.
V century:467 A.D.. Fall of the Western Roman Empire in the power of the barbarian peoples.
6th century:Year 553. The Byzantines complete the conquest of Italy.
7th century: Year 632. Death of Muhammad, Muslim armies conquered the Middle East, expansion of Islam.
8th century:Year 711. The Muslims cross the Strait of Gibraltar and invade Spain. End of the Visigothic Kingdom and beginning of the Arab rule in the peninsula.
9th century:Year 800. Charlemagne is crowned Emperor of the West.
Year 814. Death of Charlemagne.
X century:Year 905. Navarra becomes an independent kingdom.
Eleventh century:Year 1081. Henry IV attacks Italy.
XII century:Year 1105. Henry IV of Germany is overthrown.
XIII century:Year 1202. Fourth crusade to reconquer the Holy Land, but which changed its course, ending with the conquest and sack of Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire.
4th century:Year 1312. Henry VII, the first monarch of the Holy Roman Empire to be crowned Emperor since Frederick II Hohenstoufen.
V century:Year 1453. Fall of the Byzantine Empire.
Year 1492. Discovery of America.
16th century -> Modern Age: Humanism and Romanticism.
Empires of the Middle Ages
After the fall of the Roman Empire, Europe was left unprotected and ungoverned, so the different Empires fought each other for power.
5th - 8th centuries: The German-Roman Kingdoms.
6th - 15th centuries: Byzantine Empire.
8th - 11th centuries: Carolingian empire.
