Example of Syllabic Division of Words
Orthography / / July 04, 2021
The Spanish words are phonetically divided into syllables. A syllable is a grouping of vowel and consonant sounds that are pronounced with a single emission or blow of voice. That is, a syllable is a united group of sounds that we pronounce and that together form different words. For example, the word competence It is made up of four syllables: com - pe - ten - cia. So, to correctly syllable a word it is important to pay attention to its pronunciation.
Let's look at more examples of words divided into syllables:
- Computer: computer (the word computer has 5 syllables)
- Passionate: a - pa - sio - na - do (the word passionate has 5 syllables)
- Movie: movie (the word movie has 4 syllables)
- Pharmacy: pharmacy (the word pharmacy has 3 syllables)
- Colorant: Colorant (the word Colorant has 4 syllables)
- Well: well (the word well has 2 syllables)
To divide words into syllables, the following general rules can be taken into account:
- If there are two vowel phonemes in which one is tonic (pronounced with intensity) and the other is unstressed (pronounced without intensity), they must be separated into different syllables. For example: po- de r í- or, mto – ands - tro, to – é - convict.
- The vowels that form diphthong or tripthong remain in the same syllable since they are pronounced as a phonetic grouping. For example: vie-ne, Cwowh-tea-moc, Ne-tza-hual-co-yotl, Yau-te-pec, za-na-ho-r
- When a word is composed of a prefix, this morpheme forms a single syllable. For example: in-active, sub-or-di-nar, sub-to lease, in-timely, des-adjust, former - pe - ri - men - to.
Classification of syllables
Syllables can be classified into the following types:
- Open syllables. They are the syllables that end with the sound of a vowel (a, e, i, o, u). For example the syllables It was, me, le, gia, be, so, la, co…
- Closed syllables. They are the syllables that end with the sound of a consonant. For example the syllables al, mel, cer, tor, mal, can, per, sor, dud…
- Unstressed syllables. They are the syllables that are pronounced without intensity. For example, in the word practitioner, the stressed syllables are prac, you, you.
- Tonic syllables. They are the words that are pronounced with greater intensity compared to unstressed syllables. For example: mobility (mo - vi - li - dad), insurance (I know - gu - ro), heart (co - ra - zone)…
Classification of words according to the position of the stressed syllable:
Words are classified according to the position in which the stressed syllable is located in the following word classes:
- Sharp words. The acute words are those that have the stressed syllable in the last syllable. They are accentuated when they end in n, s or vowel. Examples of sharp words: vertical (see - ti - lime), asked (pre - gun - to), demolish (de - mo - ler).
- Serious words. Grave words are those with the stressed syllable on the penultimate syllable. They are stressed when they end in a consonant, except in n or s. Examples of serious words: destiny (des - you - no), useless (i- wildebeest - til), dictionary (dic - cio - na - rio), encounter (in - cuen - tro) ...
- Esdrújulas words. The words esdrújulas are those that have the stressed syllable in the penultimate syllable. All the esdrújulas words are always accentuated. Examples of esdrújulas words: Doricdo - ri - co), mystical (my - you - ca), love me (who - re - me), logical (it - gi - co).
- Words sobreesdrújulas. The sobreesdrújulas words are those that have the stressed syllable before the penultimate syllable. All the words sobreesdrújulas are always stressed. Examples of sobreesdrújula words: assure me (a - se - go - ra - me - lo), promise us (pro - I - te - nos - lo), expose it to me (ex - put - ga - me - lo) ...
Classification of words according to their number of syllables
- Monosyllable words. Monosyllable words are those that have only one syllable. For example: es, mi, la, tu, de, por, le, nos.
- Bisyllable words. Bisyllable words are those with two syllables. For example: said (di - jo), myth (mi - to), astro (as - tro), sing (sing), mix (mix).
- Trisyllable words. Trisyllable words are those with three syllables. For example: sugar (a - zú - car), wake up (wake up), school (co - le - gio), Canada (Ca - na - dá), return (re - gre - so) ...
- Tetrasyllable words. Tetrasyllable words are those with four syllables. For example: molcajete (mol - ca - je - te), trained (a - dies - tra - do), distribution (dis - tri - bu - tion), Asian (a - siá - ti - co), aging (in - ve - heh - cer) ...
- Polysyllable words. Polysyllable words are those with five or more syllables. For example: bakery (pa - na - de - rí - a), medicine (me - di - ca - men - to), glassware (cris - ta - le - rí - a), unexpected (i - nes - pe - ra - do ), location (location).
