Jean Le Rond D'alembert, renowned French mathematician and philosopher of the enlightened movement, was born on November 16, 1717 in Paris.
Jean Le Rond D'alembert He was characterized by a philosophy of tolerance and skepticism as far as religion and also metaphysics are concerned; his specialty was focused on natural philosophy, his thought was the product of the influence of other thinkers such as Descartes, Bacon, Locke and Newton himself.
"The preliminary speech of the Encyclopédie", directed by Denis Diderot, was one of the most outstanding works of him together with the "Treatise on dynamics" where he formulated the theorem that bears his name, D'alembert's principle or fundamental theorem of algebra”.
Among the subjects he dealt with were mathematics through physics, with the problem of three bodies: the impossibility of finding equations of the trajectories and the instability of the system; the precision of the equinoxes, the reason for the slippage of the seasons; the vibrating strings that are the different modes of vibration and are an application of music. Consequently, he also studied differential equations and partial derivative equations. It was he who invented a criterion to distinguish a convergent series from a divergent one.
