Brainstorming Example
Administration / / July 04, 2021
Brainstorming or Brainstorming for its term in English, is a widely used resource in administration. It is used when there is a work team that must solve a problem or organize a project, and it is necessary to collect proposals to find the best way to achieve it. It is usually carried out as a meeting in a boardroom and with tools such as a white board with markers or blank sheets of bond paper.
Steps for brainstorming
- The problem to be solved, the situation to be tackled or the project to be put into action is defined.
- A "college" is established, which is the gathering of several individuals, in a boardroom or controlled environment in which they can focus their attention.
- The problem, situation or project is presented to the participating subjects, briefly explaining what it consists of and what it is that you want to achieve.
- Brainstorm as is; Individuals are asked to make proposals to reach a solution. The name of “brainstorming” refers precisely to the team arrival of each proposal or idea.
- Then, when the necessary suggestions and proposals have been made, they are all evaluated.
- Less convenient or more expensive proposals are discarded, and those that can help solve the problem are outlined.
- They filter until they have the ones that work and the final one begins to be structured.
Brainstorming is used in areas where problem solving is common, such as:
- Marketing
- Pubilicity
- Business field
- Medical scope
- Group dynamics
- School projects
- Family projects
Sample brainstorming for a school project
For a school project, students are asked to get together in teams of five and do a piece of work to expose the properties of sunlight. A team meets and brainstorms by following these steps:
- One member asks them for suggestions and they write them down in a notebook.
- The ideas are: use a solar cell to convert it into electricity, build a solar stove, create a parable of aluminum foil to burn a piece of paper at one end.
- The solar cell is discarded first because it is an expensive device. Building the solar stove is ruled out due to the complexity of its construction.
- Since there are no more proposals, the unanimous decision is reached by the parable of aluminum foil.
Once you have the project to carry out, a second phase of brainstorming is carried out:
- Suggestions are requested on where to buy the material, on procedures to carry out the project.
- The roles are assigned in the team: who will do the calculations, who will buy the materials, who will build the project.
Example of brainstorming to diagnose a patient
The doctor in charge of a peculiar patient brings together his team to make a diagnosis together through brainstorming. The steps are the following:
- They sit at a blackboard and the attending physician writes the symptoms observed in the patient on it.
- The doctor asks his team if there were any other symptoms that are not on the list and, if they did, he writes them down.
- After completing the list of symptoms, the doctor asks others to suggest possible diagnoses based on it.
- Brainstorming begins, consisting of all the team's suggestions.
- If there is a disease that does not match the symptoms, it is ruled out.
- When the suggestions fit perfectly, the conclusion is reached and the diagnosis is established, confirmed by all.
- The doctor takes that diagnosis and carries out the treatment of the patient.
Sample Family Vacation Outing Brainstorming
The steps that a family that wants to go on vacation follows are:
- The whole family gathers in the living room of the house and the father presents the general proposal.
- The mother or a son propose to travel to the beach.
- Another child can discard it if there was a similar trip the previous year, to look for a different one.
- The grandmother confirms and suggests that they visit other relatives who live near the mountains.
- All members see it as a good idea and discard the other options.
- Thus a unanimous resolution is reached.
A second phase of brainstorming is reached, this time to decide which family member to visit.
- The first proposal is from the eldest daughter, who proposes to visit Aunt Rosa who lives in the same city and stay with her all the vacations.
- Then the grandfather proposes that it be his sister who lives in England.
- Some relatives accept this proposition, but do not want Aunt Rosa and her relatives to stay.
- The grandfather makes the proposal to collect money together to be able to take a family trip with all the close relatives.
- The proposal is accepted and everyone offers the money they have available without unbalancing the programmed expenses.
- The father decides to communicate with her sister and invite her.
