Example of Prepositions of Place in English

    Administration   /   by admin   /   July 04, 2021

A preposition is a word that serves to establish a relationship between the subject of a sentence with complements or, relating it to another noun. Although by themselves they do not make sense, by relating the parts of the sentence they provide the sense of the relationship between the subject and the complements that it connects. There are four types of relationships: mode, place, time (also called circumstantial) and movement (also called direction).

Prepositions of place in English are those that help express the position of one object with respect to another.

Many of the prepositions of place are also used as prepositions of mode or movement, their function being differentiated by the context in which they are used.

The main prepositions of movement are:  in, on, under, above, over, near, far, in front of, behind, aside, beside, next to, between, among, up, down.

In, on under. All these prepositions translate on. Each one has its specific use.

In It is used when we speak of an object or person that is inside some place or site. Can also be used inside:

The coins are inside the bag.

    Joan is in her room.

On We use it to talk about an object that is on top of another:

The paper sheets are on my desk.

Hey The cat is on the table!

Under we use it to talk about an object that is under another:

The dog is under the desk.

The pen is under your notebook.

Above, over. These words are used to express something that is on top of something else, although they do not necessarily have contact with it, as is the case with the preposition on:

Here, in the middle of the sea, only the sky is above us.

And the darkness of the night is over the city.

near, far. These words are antonyms and mean near and far respectively:

The car is near the house.

My job is far from here.

In front of, behind, beside, next to. These expressions tell us about the distance one object occupies with respect to another, considering that both retain their distance relationship, being relatively static.

In front of is a preposition that means "in front of". We use it for an object that is in front of another or in front of us:

I have a store in front of the school.

The dog is in front of the sheeps.

Behind, meanwhile, means behind. It helps us to talk about objects that are behind something or someone:

    John, Mary is behind you.

Give me the phone that is behind the watch, please.

beside, next to. Together, to one side near. It is used to express that an object is to one side or next to another.

Beside gives us the idea of something that is next to something else, in a certain place:

My pen is beside my glasses.

The screwdriver is beside the other tools.

Next to It also tells us about something that is close to something else, but in an indeterminate place or of which we are not completely sure. Sometimes, especially when we talk about people, it means the opposite, that is, that someone is too close to another person:

I left my pen on the desk, next to the phone.

Well, Oscar is next to Lynda.

Between, among. Both mean between, in the middle, or surrounded by.

Between we use it for an object that is between two objects, whether they are similar or different:

    Harry pass between the cars.

MI Casa es between 21th street and 22th street.

Among meanwhile, it is used to talk about an object that is between three or more objects:

There is a lemon among the oranges.

Oh god! This boy is the bean among the rice!

Up down. They serve to speak of a vertical relationship in relation to another object. Up means up and down under:

Up stairs, I have my bedroom.

Down stairs, you will find the cellar.
