Additions and counting is boring, but appreciating the "cool" side of math can help you be more interested and help you stay up to date in your math classes.

Understand that what you learn in school is not just math. In school, you learn to do certain kinds of problems over and over again, or learn a concept that can help you in real life. This is not the most interesting part of mathematics, and to tell the truth, it is too boring.
Learn about the tricks. There are many tricks in math that can help you with many jobs. These tips are fun to know because they help you save time. And they are also interesting. For example: Try to add all the numbers between 1 and 100. That's boring math, something your teacher left you for homework. But there is an easier way to do it. 100 + 1 = 101, right? 99 + 2 = 101. Like 98 + 3, 97 +, 96, 5, etc. So if you multiply 101 by the amount of these apres, you get the whole sum of all the numbers which would be 5050. You could have done 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6... but you would have gotten bored easily.
Think about the theory. The theory can be really boring but if you think about it, it can be too "cool". For example, think about infinity. This is something to think about on its own. But then think about adding infinity to infinity. But infinity has no end, it is the longest number. How is it possible that 2xINFINITE exists? In fact, 2XINFINITE equals INFINITE. Oh! Wow! Cool!. Ok, maybe it's not that much fun, but it's pretty cool if you're looking for a reason to like math.

Read "The Devil of Numbers", by Hans Magnus Enzensberger. It is a story about mathematics written in the form of history.
Remember that school math is not all math. It is much more than that.
It can help you think that math is like this: What they teach you in a math class is information, and the use of math is application. Therefore, when the teacher teaches adding, that is getting information. Applying it is using the information learned to answer a question like 3 + 5 = 8. If you get stuck, try to think: What am I missing? Information? Or is my application wrong?
