Example of Adding Fractions
Math / / July 04, 2021
Fractions are quantities that are expressed with a numerator (tells us how many parts we are talking about) and a denominator (indicates how the unit is divided). Being numerical values, they participate in all basic mathematical operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. On this occasion, we will talk about the sum.

How do you add the fractions?
To add fractions, the requirements are as follows:
- All must be in the form of a proper fraction or improper fraction
- That they all have the same denominator
If the fractions are mixed, they will have to be converted to an improper fraction. You can know how to solve them here: Example of Sum of Mixed Fractions.
There are going to be two main cases in which we will have to add fractions:
- Sum of fractions with the same denominator
- Sum of fractions with different denominators
Sum of fractions with the same denominator
When you have the same denominator in all fractions, the sum is calculated
adding all the numerators. In the end, if the result is an improper fraction, it is converted to a mixed fraction to write it more formally. For example:
Sum of fractions with different denominators
When you have different denominators in the fractions, the necessary ones will be transformed to equivalent fractions have the same denominator. When this is achieved, all the numerators can be added. In the end, if the result is an improper fraction, it is converted to a mixed fraction to write it more formally.
