    Example of Own Fractions

    Math   /   by admin   /   July 04, 2021

    A fraction is a value that represents a portion of the whole. It is made up of a numerator, a denominator and a line that divides them. The proper fraction is the simplest type of fraction, and has the following characteristics:

    • Its value does not reach the integer 1.
    • Its numerator is less than its denominator.

    The unit as a fraction

    Integers can also be represented as fractions, for example:

    1 = 1/1: has completed the unit 1 time

    2 = 2/1: has completed the unit 2 times

    3 = 3/1: has completed the unit 3 times

    4 = 4/1: has completed the unit 4 times

    Only the integer (1 = 1/1), could be treated as proper fraction, since the numerator is not greater than denominator. From then on, all fractions are improper, because the numerator exceeds the denominator.

    Operations of proper fractions

    The proper fractions are values, so they also participate in mathematical operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

    Sum of proper fractions

    The only requirement for a group of proper fractions to be added is that they have

    the same denominator. If they don't have it, you have to find a common denominator.

    For example:

    In the following sum, the 2 and 6 are the denominators. To add the fractions, we identify that the number 6 is a common multiple for 2 and 6. That is why we choose 6 as the common denominator. In the first fraction you have to multiply (both 1 and 2) by 3, to adjust it to terms of the denominator 6.

    Subtraction of proper fractions

    In the following subtraction, the 3 and 9 are the denominators. To subtract the fractions, we identify that the number 9 is a common multiple for 3 and 9. So we choose 9 as the common denominator. In the first fraction, we must multiply (both 1 and 3) by 3, to adjust it to terms of the denominator 9.

    Multiplication of proper fractions

    Multiplication is the simplest operation between proper fractions. Numerator by numerator and denominator by denominator are multiplied:

    Multiplication of proper fractions

    Division of proper fractions

    The division of proper fractions consists of two steps:

    • Invert numerator and denominator of one of them
    • Multiply online
