“In an eminently oral civilization, such as New Spain, music - understood as a code - was much more than an ornament and transcended its playful and aesthetic dimensions; it constituted the fine network of unwritten identity codes, in which all social classes found an accessible and welcoming message. Music is, therefore, the sound refuge of the sensibilities and devotions of the multifaceted and complex viceregal society. "

Resume: Music played an extremely important role during the colonial era, since it was a tool for the evangelization of the newly submitted indigenous population. Later, music was one of the fundamental bases for the construction of identities regional and local New Spain that were the result of miscegenation and the growing demands of the Creole. In fact, the music would reflect many of the characteristics of these groups, synthesizing in many cases their political aspirations that would give rise to the independence movements in the century XIX. In this way, music is a very important part in the development of the Mexican nationality, being one of the most culturally significant features of it.
