The Strengthening of the Bourgeoisie
Universal History / / July 04, 2021
With the weakening of the feudal system, numerous serfs abandoned their feudal lords, so the kings saw in this situation the opportunity to regain the power that the feudal lords had taken from them, and they decided to fight these. The feudal lords defeated by the kings, became the court nobility (the king's court); thus disappeared the power that they had previously had.
The bourgeois They helped the kings to win by making an alliance with them and giving them money for their army in exchange for protecting their commercial interests. This alliance strengthened the king, who had sufficient authority to unite cities and fiefdoms with common customs and interests. Thus were born the first nation states, that is, countries like England, France and Spain; this happened in the second half of the 15th century, in the early modern age.
Often both concepts are confused and it is thought that the Nation and the State are synonymous. This is a mistake, since conceptually they have a different meaning.
Condition.- Population settled in a territory and with a government strong enough to maintain internal order and external respect.
Nation.- Social community, united by feelings, ideas, traditions, customs and own needs, which is not confused with other human groups and which is perpetuated over time.
The difference between State and Nation is that in the Nation there is no authority capable of exercising its sovereignty, that is, its own power, it cannot be called a State. This exists when authority (government) is consolidated.
