The Shoulder is the structure that joins the upper limb to the thorax, it is the joint which has the highest range of movement which also makes it the most unstable joint. Three bones are involved in it, such as the humerus, the scapula and the clavicle.
The shoulder allows movement of the arm in flexion, extension, internal rotation, external rotation, adduction (closer to the trunk) and abduction (away from the trunk); all this means that the arm can be placed in any plane of space.
Causes of shoulder pain
I know esteem that at a general level, 3 to 7 out of every 100 people have some type of involvement of the shoulder joint. Much of the disorders are degenerative due to overuse of the joint or secondary to sports-type injuries, these include:
Osteoarthritis Cartilage injury can affect the joint that joins the humerus with the scapula called the glenohumeral or the junction of the clavicle with the scapula known as the acromioclavicular.
Biceps or supraspinatus tendinitis.
It involves inflammation of the tendons with which these muscles attach to the humerus.
Rotator cuff injury. The rotator cuff is a group of four tendons that line the joint providing stability, it is injured by trauma or overuse of the joint.
Bursitis.
It corresponds to the inflammation of the serous bags, which are structures filled with fluid whose function is to facilitate the sliding of the tendons over the joints, usually inflamed or torn after sudden movements producing very intense pain that limits the movement.
Adhesive capsulitis also known as frozen shoulder.
In this case, all the ligaments and tendons of the shoulder are affected, accompanied by fibrosis, which means that the shoulder cannot perform any type of surgery. movement, is sometimes the product of the voluntary immobilization that the person does to avoid the pain that leads to finally losing all ranges of movement.
Tips to avoid shoulder injuries
- Avoid carrying out activities with your arms that warrant carrying them above your head, if you must do it, go up ladder or use a stool so that the work area is at shoulder height and not above they.
- Do not sleep or watch television with your hands under your head, this causes tension in the rotator cuff.
- Avoid transferring weight, if you must, distribute it between both arms or transfer the load by hugging it to your chest.
- Women should avoid wearing very large or heavy purses.
- It should be ensured that the kids and young people use the backpack properly by placing a strap on each shoulder, if possible prefer a backpack with wheels.
- Before practicing any sport it is necessary to warm up beforehand and do stretching at the end, it is advisable to carry out a plan of training that allows to strengthen the muscles most used to prevent them from being injured.
- Pain is a notice that something is not right, if shoulder pain appears after any activity or movement, stop it immediately.
