The word abide is used in our language to refer that acceptance voluntarily manifested or demonstrated by someone in relation to compliance of a rule current or a authority, that is, the individual recognizes and respects the authority that emanates from the person who invites or intimates him to fulfill a obligation or action, and by case it is that he will carry out satisfactorily the fulfillment of the indication that he sends.
Generally, individuals follow those directives, orders, that come from people we recognize as superiors in relation to the role they play or the position they occupy, for example, in our field labor. So, it is because of such a situation that when an order comes from a boss, it will be followed without resistance. Because of course, it is because of that authority that we recognize these people that we fear that if we do not correspond to that directive, we may receive a sanction or a punishment. Something that is frequent when this happens.
In the personal, intimate sphere, people usually obey the orders given to us by our parents, our grandparents, that is, those people who have been in charge of our education and training and because of the role per se they occupy, which is already socially agreed to be respected. If a mother tells her minor child that she will not be able to go out on Monday night because she has not complied as she should with school duties he must abide by that order because she has the authority in the house until he is older than age.
On the other hand, at work, employees must, yes or yes, abide by those orders that come from their immediate superiors, even in spite of being against them. If an employee does not comply with the directives or activities entrusted to him by his boss, normally, a corrective will ensue and in the most extreme cases the employee for this attitude you may lose your job outright.
And the other use attributed to this word designates that ability of someone to notice or be aware of an issue that happens around them.
Among the synonyms that are used the most for this word are obey, accept and respect.
