To know the meaning of a word it is very useful to go back to its origin. And etymology is the study of the origin of words. It is a controversial knowledge, since there is usually no obvious evidence of the training of a term, so the etymology incorporates a certain debate, where the positions are sometimes confronted.
Etymologically confusion comes from the Latin confusio and refers to the action of mixing and uniting different elements. Most words with the stem fund express abundance of something (diffuse, melt, or confuse). There is a very curious version about the confusion and it claims that it comes from the Chinese philosopher Confucius. This popular version implies that, in an ironic way, confusion alludes to Confucius because the depth of his teachings were not easy to understand, causing confusion.
There is a biblical reference to confusion that is paradigmatic. It is the passage from the Tower of Babel Bible. The men spoke in a beginning a language
and they understood each other without any difficulty. Motivated by their pride they built a great city with a very high tower to emulate divine power and God punished them for their vanity, creating the diversity of languages; thus causing that they could not understand each other. This story talks about the origin of the civilization and the beginning of confusion. From a focus Everyday confusion exists when there is a lack of clarity in relation to a topic or situation. Confusion also implies a level of disorder. If we use the idea of confusion in a personal sense, an individual can say that he is confused because has doubts or some kind of internal debate and therefore does not have enough mental clarity to take a decision.
Confusion can manifest itself spontaneously, unintentionally (confusion in traffic or in a large crowd). However, the confusion could be caused for some purpose.
The diversity of situations and human limitations, both physical and intellectual, create many confusing situations. And it is logical that it should be so, since otherwise it would be a world and human relations ordered, subject to unalterable guidelines. The order and the absence of confusion is an almost unimaginable idea, because where there are people there is confusion.
