The word sponsorship can have two main uses that, although they are related with a similar meaning, are frequent for different situations. One of the most common ways in which the concept of sponsorship is used is when it refers to some type of protection or accompaniment that a person or institution You can make another person or institution so that the second one achieves objectives that on their own they could not achieve so easily. Similarly, the other use of the word sponsorship has to do with the advertising that certain brands or companies carry out on athletes or artists to help them financially to achieve their objectives. In this second case, sponsorship is much more linked to financial support and can often be criticized already that supposes the loss of the independence or autonomy of the one who is sponsored by being supported by large Business.
Sponsorship is a phenomenon that has existed since time immemorial, whenever someone social group it required the help of another more powerful sector at the political, social, economic or cultural level. Patronage was very common in the immediate aftermath of the closing of the
Middle Ages, when Florentine artists and from other Italian cities required the support and accompaniment of patron (powerful people politically and economically) in order to develop their careers.Today, sponsorship can be given in different spheres, for example when a person requires intellectual sponsorship, moral or professional from a university to carry out your thesis or work of investigation. Also, as said, it can occur when an athlete or artist requires the support of companies or powerful people at an economic level to finance their arrival at events such as Olympic Games or that allow them to make exhibitions that they could not do on their own. Sponsorship always implies a certain level of commitment to the one who supports the cause (at whatever level) because it is thanks to him (person or institution) that the planned objectives can finally be achieved.
