What is Nylon?

In our society, life without some tools or technologies is almost unthinkable, one of these is the Nylon ®, this is an artificial polymer that was created on February 28, 1935, by Wallace Hume Carothers. This was patented until September 20, 1938. After Wallace's death, the DuPont Company retained the patent. This company produced it to replace rayon and silk.
The nylon boom came in 1938 with stockings, which competed with silk, but cheaper, much greater resistance and elasticity, which cannot be attacked by the moth and does not require ironing. However, they have the peculiarity that it crystallizes after a long time in the sun.
The Second World War forced this company to turn its attention to manufacturing parachutes, ropes and many articles of maximum resistance, which had to serve the cause.
The arrival of a nylon article in Europe was until 1945 towards the end of the war.
The Nylon formula for stockings was modified to produce less resistant fibers, since it was thought that if it retained the resistance original, the sales of stockings would not be enough to sustain the industry, this reformulation was carried out with regret by the scientists of Dupont. The original formula was preserved for specialized and military uses.

It is believed that the name is a play on words that refers to NY (New York) and Lon (London), cities where the creators of this product resided.
Due to its great success, it is currently used to make knits, fabrics, threads, bristles, lines, parachutes, and guitar strings. Nylon can also be molded allowing rigid items such as spatulas, combs and kitchen utensils to be made.
