Dr. Coimbra is a Brazilian neurologist who has developed a multiple sclerosis treatment protocol based on the administration of high doses of vitamin D.
Basis of the treatment protocol with high doses of vitamin D
Multiple sclerosis is a degenerative disease of the nervous system in which the immune system attacks the myelin lining of nerves. This affects its function leading to the development of various symptoms including paralysis, sensory disturbances, dizziness, loss of vision and decreased force muscular.
All these discomforts can be reversed, however in some people they remain for a long time leading to the development of disability.
It has been seen that the number of cases of multiple sclerosis increases as we move away from Ecuador. Its highest incidence occurs in temperate countries that have strong winters, latitudes in which the exposition the sun is less. The analysis of this fact led to establish a relationship between low exposure to sunlight and the development of autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
Given this fact, a question arises: What impact can low exposure to sunlight have? The only one of importance is that the sun, in addition to providing heat, is a source of ultraviolet radiation that is used by skin cells to produce cholecalciferol or vitamin D3.
In turn, this vitamin has an important effect on the immune system. That is why the hypothesis that people with low exposure to sunlight have lower levels of vitamin D and are more susceptible to developing multiple sclerosis.
Results obtained
These investigations led to treatment with high doses of vitamin D to patients affected by autoimmune diseases more Beyond multiple sclerosis, patients with psoriasis, vitiligo, type 2 diabetes, and lupus and rheumatoid arthritis were included here, among other
In the particular case of patients with multiple sclerosis, who have followed Dr. Coimbra's protocol, report controlling the symptoms of the disease, keep without new outbreaks for a long time and there is even disappearance of the lesions shown in brain images such as resonance studies magnetic.
Dr. Coimbra himself assures that with this treatment patients are discharged from his consultation after 2 years of treatment, which is unthinkable with current traditional regimens based on drugs such as interferon and fingolimod.
Even though this scheme therapeutic treatment has received criticism and is not widely known, there are already publications of clinical studies that report a high safety and the efficacy of high doses of vitamin D, in the range of 10,000 IU per day.
Although it seems somewhat simple, it deserves a very tight control
Vitamin D at low doses is safe, however, at high doses it can cause the elevation of calcium levels in the blood in ranges that can become toxic to the kidneys.
The dose of vitamin D prescribed is variable for each patient. This depends on the laboratory values obtained for the various parameters on which this vitamin has a direct effect. These mainly include the levels of calcium, phosphorus and hormone parathyroid.
These studies are performed regularly throughout the treatment and will determine the maintenance dose that the patient should receive.
If you are interested in being treated with this protocol, consult your doctor or find a doctor trained in this protocol in your country. In no case should you self-medicate since the toxic effects of vitamin D are irreversible.
