The feminine noun vorágine comes from the Latin vorago and means whirlpool. From this original meaning, this word has three meanings.
Maelstrom in the aquatic environment
At sea, in a river or in a lake, intense eddies occur from time to time that can cause shipwrecks or cause a person to drown. Thus, in the sentence "a maelstrom in the coast caused the sinking of the small boat "refers to this natural phenomenon.
The word vortex is therefore synonymous with whirlpool. In this sense, it must be specified that not all eddies are the same. Some of them are very particular, as is the case with the Maelstrom, a giant whirlpool that acts like a shredder stream.
Intense and contradictory passions
The feeling of passion can present itself in an intense and at the same time messy way. This is what happens in the love field. The lover sometimes feels love and I hate at the same time and this contradiction is valued as a maelstrom of feelings.
The concept of maelstrom is equally applicable in situations related to betrayal, disappointment or despair. As with eddies in the aquatic environment, we have feelings with a certain similarity, since we are absorbed by a
force that we can't control.Confusing situations
On those occasions in which confusion, the tumult of people and a clear social disorder reign, the term maelstrom is used. In this sense, we speak of a whirlwind of events, which refers to a chaotic situation full of difficulties.
The language of nature projected into human situations
To refer to an event in nature we use the word vortex and its meaning is projected to human situations where confusion and chaos prevail (confusion may be in the individual's own spirit or it may be a situation that occurs in full Street).
The word vortex allows us to remember that this type of parallelism between the language of nature and human reality is quite frequent in everyday language.
Thus, when we live intense sentimental relationships we call them "stormy relationships", when in a place there is a bad environment among people it is said that you can "cut the air"and when someone regains optimism we say that again" the sun rises "in his heart.
