East mammal medium size and the same family that the domestic pig belongs to the gender Sus and the Scrofa species. Although it is native to the forests of Europe, it has spread throughout Africa, Asia and America.
Main features
- Its weight ranges between 40 and 90 kilos. Its color is variable, since it can be grayish or even reddish.
- In the wild it lives for about 13 years and in captivity it reaches 20 years.
- It is an omnivorous animal, which feeds mainly on vegetables, roots, insects, truffles and even carrion. It adapts to very different habitats, but it usually looks for territories with abundant vegetation and Water.
- Males normally live alone and approach females during the period of reproduction. Instead, females live in herds (like pigs, herds of wild boar are called herds).
- Although you have poor vision, you have a powerful sense of smell. To regulate your body temperature the wild boar wallows in a mud bath (with this habit it also manages to eliminate the parasites that inhabit its body).
- During the day it is a sedentary animal and at night it is when it is most active. It is capable of traveling great distances in search of food.
- Its meat is especially valued by consumers looking for quality (Sausages and cured meats are also marketed).
- It is a very prolific species with a high number of young (the young are called wild boars and those that are less than one year old are known as scratches because of their peculiar stripes on the back).
- At the moment of giving birth, the females move away from the herd and build a small enclosure with branches and herbs to warm the young. When the male rays are independent of the female they join with an adult male, thus becoming her squire. The adult male is known as a macareno and the youngest specimens are called boars.
In agricultural areas its presence is a very worrying issue
When a herd of wild boar does not find food, it is forced to move and can devastate cultivated areas. Wild boar hunting drives are frequently organized in threatened areas to protect crops and to reduce population of these animals.
Finally, do not forget that with its powerful fangs it becomes an animal that can be very dangerous, especially when it feels threatened.
