As with many terms and words in the language, the concept of hiatus is a concept that can be found in three different areas without the three meanings having much to do with each other. Actually, it is important to note that the word hiatus comes from the Latin term hiatus which is used to mean separation, space between two things. The term hiatus is then used in different settings with meanings that refer to that idea but in different ways.
The hiatus happens in the phonetics of words when there is a separation between syllables that end and begin successively with vowels. The opposite of the hiatus is the diphthong since it supposes that the vowels are kept together, for example in the case of a word like fiaca (whose division is fia-ca) or eloquent (eloquent). The hiatus is then the separation of vowels, the space that occurs between these two vowels, for example in the cases of words like philosophy (whose division is fi-lo-so-fí-a). The phonetic hiatus can have two main forms: the simple one, when the division is without the existence of
accentuation or from accent mark (for example with the word theater; te-a-tro) or the accented, when it is the accent or the accent that contributes to mark the separation (for example, in the word day; day). The term hiatus is also used in spaces such as the metric of the poetry. There, the hiatus is understood as the space that opens between different synalephs (the union of a final vowel in one word and the initial of the next as a hairororscuro) to get more syllables. In addition, the concept of hiatus is also present in the medicine and in anatomy, when it is used to mark those spaces that are artificially generated in the body from an injury or blow.
