The Paris Agreement, also known as the Paris Conference, is an international pact that was signed in 2015 by more than 190 countries. The central theme of it is the climate change, a reality that affects the entire planet. This international summit outlines a direction so that the future of humanity is not threatened by climatic changes generated by human action.
The harmful effects of carbon emissions have been known since the 1950s. dioxide carbon emissions and alarming data have generated the need to reach agreements at the international level.
Main objectives
One of the purposes is to set limits in relation to global warming. In this sense, it has been agreed that the heating process does not exceed two degrees Celsius and, if possible, that it be 1.5 degrees Celsius.
A second objective is to increase the capacity of countries to adapt to the effects of climate change. In other words, it is intended to build societies that are capable of resisting the effects of climate change.
As a third purpose, a transition period towards economies that do not depend on carbon is proposed. At the same time, there is a global commitment to promote sustainable development in the set of economic activity.
The Paris Agreement implies a paradigm shift in the energy model and in the mentality of human beings
The effects of climate change are known and all of them have a potential devastating. Thus, it is foreseeable that there will be an increase in desertification and that there will be all kinds of natural disasters. As these effects are clearly harmful to the planet, it is necessary to change towards an economic model that is as less polluting as possible. Is aspiration It is not achieved simply with new industrial and energy models, but it is essential that there is a change of individual and collective mentality.
A leap has been made with the Paris Agreement qualitative, since it is intended that the emissions of gases greenhouse effect cease to be a threatening reality. For the Agreement to enter into force, it must be ratified by 55 countries and that they represent at least 55% of global emissions. Its entry into force will take place from 2020 and the measures that are adopted in subsequent years must be periodically reviewed.
