The term drive away refers to the action of making a person or an animal flee through the use of some device or instrument, specially arranged for that purpose. That is, there are different tools and resources that fulfill the function of distancing, either an animal or a person.
For example, in the field of safety, the alarms turn out to be the quintessential elements when it comes to scare away thieves. It is common for houses, as a security measure, to place alarm devices that are specially designed to sound when a stranger tries to enter the force; the alarm sensors will detect that intrusive presence and begin to sound. For this reason, when the thieves notice the presence of an alarm, they start to flee the place, because otherwise, the notice that gives the same will get them caught.
