Example of Passive Sentences

The passive prayer, also called passive voice prayer, is a type of sentence in which the actions expressed in the predicate of the sentence fall on the subject.

This type of subject is known as patient subject; it is called this way since a relationship of passivity is established between the subject and the predicate of the sentence. The subject does not act or execute the action of the verb, but another entity performs the action and the subject It is who suffers or receives said action.

• The food is bought by José. (The subject food he receives the action of the verb to buy; someone else performs the action: the agent plugin by José).
• The water was drunk by the dog. (The subject Water he receives the action of the verb to drink; someone else is the one who executes the action: the dog).
• The exam will be passed. (This is a passive sentence since the subject the exam suffers the action of the predicate: be approved).
• The money has been earned by my dad. (It is a passive sentence since the subject the money suffers the action expressed in the predicate: to win)

The award had been won by who deserved it. (The subject the prize he receives the action of the verb to win).

• Your trip around the world will be complete when you arrive. (The subject his trip around the world he receives the action of the verb complete)

As we see in all the previous examples, the subject is characterized by his passivity with respect to the verb. It is someone else who performs the action and the subject receives it.

It is also important to mention that there are also passive sentences in which the subject is not written, but appears implicitly. In these sentences, the conjugation and the form of the verb make it clear to which grammatical person the verb refers: if it speaks of the first, second or third person singular or plural. Even if the subject is not present, it can be deduced. For example:

• Will be received when they arrive. In this passive sentence the predicate refers to the third person plural: (they) will be welcomed.
• You were chosen by the jury. In this passive sentence the predicate refers to the second person singular: (you) were chosen.

To avoid confusing passive sentences with active sentences, we have to take into account who performs the action of the verb and on what or who this action falls.

Active sentences would be the opposite of passive sentences. Active voice sentences are distinguished by the fact that the subject of the sentence performs or executes the action of the verb; contrary to passive sentence, in which, as we already mentioned, the subject receives the action.

In active sentences who performs the action is the subject. In passive sentences, on the contrary, the person who performs the action is an agent complement. The agent complement is introduced by the preposition for and it tells us which entity executes the action of the predicate.

Let's see some examples:

• Prayeractive: José buys food. (The action to buy is done by the subject Joseph; the action falls on the direct object food).
• Prayerpassive: The food is bought by José. (The action to buy is performed by the agent plugin by José; the action falls on the patient subject Food).
• Prayeractive: Luisa lost the keys. (The action to lose is done by the subject Louise; the action falls on the direct object the keys).
