Rice, the seed of the Oryza sativa plant, is a cereal of great consumption worldwide, being the basis of the feeding of many cultures, especially Asian.
Nutritional composition
Rice is composed mainly of starch-type carbohydrates, providing an average of 130 calories per 100 grams, it is a source of nutrients which include calcium, magnesium and protein In small quantities.
The brown rice covered by a layer of bran is rich in silicon and vegetable fiber, when removing this husk these components are lost, making it easier to digestion.
Rice is a versatile food
Each culture has a particular way of preparing this cereal, which has led to it being a staple and daily food in the diet of the population general.
In Asian cultures, rice is prepared steamed with which loose grains are obtained, it is also processed to prepare rice noodles popular in Japanese cuisine, as well as Sake which is a type of wine and vinegar from rice.
The Arabs usually prepare it with added meat, especially lamb, nuts and spices, obtaining great-tasting dishes typical of Iranian and Moroccan cuisines.
In Spain, rice is part of various dishes such as paellas and asopados, in which fish and shellfish are used in their preparation, they are also combined with pork in the elaboration of sausages such as blood sausage.
In America, varieties of fried rice with vegetables, chicken, pork and seafood are offered as part of Chinese fast food.
It is also consumed in its steamed version or in preparations such as chicha, which consists of a sweet drink based on rice and milk flavored with cinnamon, in the form of powdered cereal for the elaboration of food in order to kids and infants, and even in desserts such as the delicious rice pudding or coconut rice from the Caribbean countries.
Rice has an antidiarrheal effect
Brown rice is a good source of fiber that helps fight disorders such as constipation while lowering blood cholesterol levels.
One of the rice-based preparations most used to combat health disorders is rice water, effective in combating disorders such as diarrhea, especially in children. In these cases it is recommended to toast the rice in a pot, then add water and let it boil, finally strain it and refrigerate it until it is consumed. In the case of young children, this water can be used to prepare formula or soups for consumption.
