Spanish Classes / / July 04, 2021
The characters are the subjectswho perform the actions within a narrative. When we talk about narration, It's about the oral or written form in which a story is told, and can contain from one to dozens of characters, depending on its length and the number of events it contains. In a narrative, the characters will carry an individual story or interact with each other, causing each event to lead to consequences that advance the central story.
Character types
The characters can be of various types depending on how they participate in the narrated story:
- Protagonist: he / she is the main character, and most of the events of the narrative affect him / her because it is he / she who has taken the actions. Everything revolves around this. It can be a hero, a maiden, a witch, a goblin, a professional, a student, even an animal, in short, any living being. The protagonists are made so that people who read or listen to the narration identify with them.
- Antagonist: is the character who opposes the actions of the protagonist. He is "the counterpart," so to speak. He is generally called a "villain" and his actions consist of hindering events so that the protagonist does not achieve his objectives. It can be a psychopath, a sorcerer, a ghost, a demon, or any other representation of evil, which is the usual.
- Secondary characters: They are those characters who participate in the narration, but their actions influence the development of the story to a lesser extent. It can be about friendships of the protagonist or characters that only come to put a momentary factor that can be useful for the plot.
- Storyteller: a character is said to be the narrator when the story is written in first person; that is to say, when the narrative is carried by an “I”, which is recounting what is happening to it. This character is only aware of what happens to himself, and we know his own perspective better. Most of the time he is the protagonist of the story and, as it is written in the first person, it is easier for us to identify with them.

Characterization of the characters
When creating a narrative, one of the first tasks is to characterize the characters, that is, to add the story to them. own, the qualities, characteristics, attitudes and conflicts that will define them to determine their role in the story. For example:
- Protagonist: Usually he is heroic, gentle, stoic, honest, fair, he has a difficult past that has marked him and led him to make decisions to seek a better world. They are characterized directly, assigning those attributes to identify them.
- Antagonist: usually evil, calculating, arrogant, arrogant, strategic, unfair, manipulative, with a origin that has led him astray and that leads him to want to frustrate the goals of the protagonist. They are characterized directly, including a story from his past.
- Secondary characters: they are included without so many details, but they are given a clear personality, to differentiate them throughout the story. They can have very varied characteristics depending on the purposes of the narrative. They are characterized indirectly, his actions speak more about them.
