Simple Times Example
Spanish Classes / / July 04, 2021
Simple times are verb tenses that are composed of a single word: a verb conjugated in a certain time, mode, number and person.
The simple times can be conjugated in 3 modes:
- Indicative mode
- Subjunctive mode
- Imperative mode
In addition, they are conjugated in any of the following people or numbers:
- First person of singular (me)
- Second person singular (your)
- Third person singular (he she)
- First person plural (we, we)
- Second person plural (you, you, you)
- Third person plural (they, they)
These times differ from compound times. These, on the contrary, are structured from two verb forms: the verb have (conjugated in person, time, number and mode) and a verb in participle (invariable verb form whose ending is -ado, -ido, -to, -so, -cho).
- More in: Compound times.
What are the compound times?
In Spanish there are 9 compound tenses: 5 compound tenses of the indicative mood, 3 of the subjunctive mood and one of the imperative mood. Each of these times is briefly explained below.
Simple tenses in indicative mode
The simple indicative tenses express actions that for the speaker are a fact or a reality. The simple indicative tenses are:
- Present indicative. Indicates an action that has taken place at the current moment, for example: like, I listen, you reflect, you wish, you have, we assure, you sweep, you are ...
- Simple past perfect or indicative past tense. Indicates an action that occurred in a past moment, for example: coincided, we omitted, I participated, I said, you took, you rolled, you spoke.
- Simple future or future indicative. Indicates an action that will take place at some point in the future. For example: I will sing, they will show, you will live, we will be, they will convince, I will consolidate, they will exemplify, we will fulfill.
- Imperfect past or indicative past tense. Indicates a past action that occurs simultaneously with another action that in turn takes place in the past. Acquire the termination -aba, -ía. For example: he sang, presented, ate, would, would sleep, would have, would demonstrate.
- Simple or postpreterite conditional of indicative. It expresses a hypothetical action or an action that is not yet finished. Acquire the ending -estuary. For example: I would change, you would bite, they would have, I would assure, they would prefer.
Simple tenses in subjunctive mood
The subjunctive tenses imply an action that is not a fact, but something that cannot be fully verified. Usually they express possibilities, wishes, hopes, etc. The 3 simple tenses of the subjunctive mood are:
- Present subjunctive.
- Preterite imperfect or past subjunctive.
- Future simple or future subjunctive.
Simple tenses in imperative mood
The imperative mood can only be conjugated for the second person singular or plural. There are four conjugations:
- Imperative second person singular for the pronoun your. For example: (you) go, (you) put, (you) take out, (you) study, (you) speak.
- Imperative second person singular for the pronoun you. This conjugation is for formal use or is used in courtesy formulas. For example: (you) know, (you) name, (you) know, (you) appear, (you) study.
- Imperative second person plural for pronoun you. For example: (you) eat, (you) attend, (you) return, (you) resist, (you) lose.
