Pentecost Sunday is celebrated fifty days after Easter, which is the last day of Easter. The Pentecost Mass commemorates the appearance of the Holy Spirit before the Virgin Mary and the apostles.
According to reading From the Acts of the Apostles it is told how the Holy Spirit, on the day of Pentecost, under the signs of a wind intense and of fire, bursts into the community of the disciples of Jesus Christ and in this way gives rise to the church Christian. At that moment the apostles begin their mission to announce the word of God throughout the world and in all languages.
The celebration of Pentecost, a symbol of the Christian faith
With the announcement of the Holy Spirit on the Feast of Pentecost the apostles renewed their faith and enthusiasm and from then on they decided to bear witness to their faith. It must be remembered that the Holy Spirit is the one who awakens and stimulates the faith of Christians. In this sense, the Holy Spirit grants the gift of
wisdom, advises and gives strength and peace spiritual to believers. The Holy Spirit continues to act in those who believe that Christ came to Earth, died, and rose again.Pentecost Sunday is celebrated in May or June for Catholics and Orthodox Christians.
Pentecost is also a Jewish holiday
The Jews also originally celebrated the day of Pentecost as a holiday related to the first harvests of the year. In Greek the term Pentecost means precisely fifty, since the Jews celebrated it fifty days after the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai (the Torah is the law written and spiritual guide of Judaism). In the religion Jewish on the day of Pentecost receives another name, Shavuot, which in Hebrew means weeks (the weeks of the Jews correspond to the 50 days for the Christians).
Shavuot means for the Jews to be part of God's chosen people. This holiday is the second of the three major Jewish celebrations and has a religious significance, agricultural Y cultural.
On Shavuot it is customary to study the Torah the night before the celebration. Today Jewish communities commemorate this day by air free and milk products are consumed.
The holiday of Shavuot is marked by the Jewish calendar, which is based on complex calculations in which the dates of the new moon are predicted. The Jewish calendar is marked by the account of the book of Genesis, which is part of the Torah. The Jewish calendar is decisive for its most genuine celebrations, such as Rosh Hashanah (the day of the new year), Yom Kippur (the day of forgiveness), Passover or Jewish Passover or Shavuot.
