Sin is a deviation from conduct correct. It is used in the field of religion, specifically in religions that refer to the Bible as book sacred (Judaism and Christianity).
According to the Christian religion, human beings are born with an original sin. The first men (Adam and Eve) lived in a state of absolute harmony, but were tempted by a serpent to violate a rule dictated by God, consisting of not tasting a fruit from a tree. By not respecting the prohibition, God punished the descendants of Adam and Eve (thus all of humanity) to live with the idea of sin.
Sin can be minor or serious. In the first case, it is a minor offense and occurs in a family and friendly context when the believer has not had an adequate behavior. Sin is serious when the conduct represents a clear offense to the will of God.
To eliminate sin it is necessary that there is initially a sincere repentance and for this a priest listens to the account of sins through confession. After listening to them, the priest imposes a sanction symbolic, a penance.
The internal process through which sin can be repaired is atonement. It consists of fixing in some way the evil that has been caused by sin. In Christianity, specifically in the Catholicism, there are indulgences, a form of reparation for sin; normally through some economic sacrifice (it would be like a fine), a fast or a visit to a sacred place. Through the indulgence imposed by the priest, the believer is forgiven for the sin committed.
In Catholicism the conviction is maintained that we are all sinners. In a double sense: because of original sin and because man is imperfect. No matter how well a person behaves, he will always have a defect to correct.
Sin is synonymous with vice and manifests a attitude contrary to God's wishes and, likewise, inappropriate social behavior. Therefore, there are seven capitals sins in Catholicism. They are inappropriate behaviors and there is obligation not to commit them. The sins are: lust, gluttony, greed, laziness, anger, envy and pride. All of them are vices and you have to try not to fall into them, since they are a temptation and it is easy to commit some.
The notion of sin is not used in ethical reflection. In this area, there is no list of norms, nor a repair procedure. In ethics there is an analysis of human values and an explanation of them. Both religion and ethics try from their approaches that life in society has rules of coexistence.
