"The dog He is very playful, besides he likes to sleep in the nights and go for a run through the mornings”, In that sentence, even though we have three nouns, we will understand that a universal noun is the one that prevails in all the actions of the sentence. That is, to understand a little better how universal nouns work, we will begin by explaining that Sentences in Spanish, and almost in most of the world's languages, will have two basic elements: Noun and verb.
The verb will be the action performed by the noun such as “sleep” or “run”. While we will recognize the noun as the word that refers to something, animate or inanimate. In the example that was pointed out at the beginning, we have three nouns: dog, nights and mornings, with “something” that we can point to, dog is somewhat animated, but nights and mornings belong to a more abstract field, more inanimate because nights and mornings cannot to breathe.
The difference between a universal noun and a simple one is that in a sentence the universal noun will always have an impact on the whole sentence.
Other elements.
In Spanish, these nouns may be indicated by means of an article which will be provided with the number and gender that the noun marks, however can take other elements such as adjectives, modifiers and even attributes depending on the case, in addition all these syntactic elements must respond in the same way in the number and gender of the general noun, even if some modifier is different from the gender or the number, that is, by example:
"The little girl she has a pair of pigtails and that makes her look very pretty "
In this case, the universal noun is "girl", since the whole sentence is being referred to her. It has a modifier that is "a pair of pigtails" that are only attributes of the girl, however the sentence ends up agreeing with the gender and the number of the universal noun.
These elements, previously alluded to, cannot modify or alter said nouns under any circumstances, as they are only elements that give it attributes or help to complement the action principal. It is not a rule that all sentences must have all the elements, since a simple sentence can be the case without any of them, or all of them. On the contrary, there may be compound sentences where the universal noun is accompanied by a group of elements, modifiers and accessories.
Grammatical inconsistency.
We cannot say something like: dogs They play and sleep ”, since the universal noun is in the plural and the verbs (actions) are in the singular, which causes a disagreement. Another example of this same disagreement could be: "The little girl It's beautiful ”, a third element, which is the adjective, is not in the same gender as the universal noun, that is, it does not respond to the structure that you want to mark.
This type of error is known as “grammatical incongruity” and it is usually quite frequent in foreigners who begin to learn the language and in children who begin to learn the language written.
A couple of explanatory examples:
Here are a couple of examples in different situations where universal nouns are used:
"The home yellow, which is at the end of the street where Aunt Chata lives, she is for rent, we should tell Dad to rent it. " East A specific example is a compound sentence with an embedded sentence, it has different elements such as qualifying adjectives, articles, other nouns and different verbs, however, the universal noun is "house", since all the action of the sentence is focus on her.
"The kittens They were born yesterday and they look very healthy ”. All elements agree with the universal noun, in gender (masculine) and number (plural).
“When we went to play the game every friends we looked very tired ”. Here the universal noun changes place but its elements are still in the same frequency.
