Chutney or chatni is a Hindu word and means to crush, as it is a compote that in its elaboration the ingredients must be crushed to become a solid paste. On the other hand, the term chutney refers to a gender musical characteristic of some Caribbean countries.

In India spices, sauces and condiments are highly valued as culinary complements. Chutney is similar to jam and is made from a combination of fruits and vegetables that are cooked with vinegar and also with aromatic spices.
Chutney became an international condiment due to the colonial period of the British in India. In this sense, the British usually consume it as a food supplement, for example to spread on toast or mix flavors. It is ideal to accompany meat and fish and all kinds of food.
Like jams and preserves, chutney has different characteristics, sometimes it is spicy and with an intense flavor and sometimes it is sweeter. The most popular are plum, zucchini, mango or apple chutneys.

In the Caribbean area the popular music It has many variants and one of them is the music chutney. This genus is especially known in Trinidad and Tobago and to a lesser extent in Suriname and Guyana.

Chutney music was originally part of some celebrations, especially weddings. In the 1960s songs of this genre became hits among members of the Hindu community in Trinidad and Tobago. In the 80s and 90s it became a very commercial genre due to the fusion with other styles such as calypso and blues. The predominant themes of chutneys songs are love and the exaltation of life, a thematic similar to that of Jamaican reggae.
