The term 'posthumous' is a qualifying adjective that is used to refer to all that work, individual or element that appeared after the death of its Author or parent. Coming from Latin, from the word postumus, the posthumous term literally means 'what is made known after death, after death'.
The word posthumous can be used in numerous cases and situations, although there are some of them in which it is more common and popular to use this term. In this sense, it is normal hear this concept to refer to works, writings and memoirs that are published after the death of their author as a tribute to his work. Throughout history, hundreds of authors of various kinds had to face their sad end before finishing any of their works and therefore, the publication from the same to hands from family members, acquaintances or publishers it is considered a posthumous publication.
The posthumous adjective can also be used to speak of children born after the death of the father, that is, without getting to know him. The sad situation can occur with both the father and the
mother, although its use is not as common as in the previous case. Finally, the posthumous adjective is often used to refer to various types of tributes and honors that are given to characters important after death. Many times, these tributes can be posthumous for representing a retrospective of the artist in question. But on many other occasions, the posthumous award can be an award symbolic for that artist who could not receive the decoration in life and whose work was truncated. A good example of such a situation has been that of the Australian actor Heath Ledger who, nominated for the Oscar in life, could only win it after having died unexpectedly. This situation is also very common with heroes of war and military who receive decorations and honors posthumously for their noble and committed homework.
